Old Plumbing

One of the greatest parts of living in the Seattle area is the charming older homes that make up so many of our neighborhoods. If you’re one of those lucky folks that have the pleasure of owning one of these homes just remember, like all building materials, the plumbing does wear out after a while. Older homes, mostly before 1960 used galvanized steel pipes. Steel pipes have a general life span of about 40-70 years, but may develop problems in as little as 30 years. So, it’s safe to say, if you’re living in an older home, it may be time to replace or repair parts of your system.

The tricky bit about galvanized steel pipes is that they were coated with zinc to prevent corrosion, but nothing is preventing the corrosion on the inside! You look at your pipes and from the outside they look good as new. In reality the inside could be so corroded that barely anything can flow through, or the threads could be rusted resulting in leaking or broken pipes.
